Self-Betteringment

In an effort to talk less about myself, I'm going to try to replace all unsolicited outgoing comments with "I can relate to that on multiple levels."

Music 104B Final Project

David Coutant 12 October 2016 The Echo (Los Angeles) Poster Children / State to State / Batwings Catwings Instrumentation used: two guitars, bass, drums (supplemented with drum machine) and vocals. The first band, Batwings Catwings played simple 4/4 and 6/8 rhythms with a lot of barre chords and power. The guitars both played lead, sometimes taking turns doing solos, sometimes playing dual leads a la the Allman Brothers Band. Guitarists Ray Santillan III and Jeffrey Byron play Rickenbacker and Fender guitars with a distorted rock sound. Bassist Cindy Sukrattanawong played a Precision Bass, and she had a solid, clean sound. Drummer Clay Johnson, who formed the band in 2009, plays a standard acoustic kit of probably 7 pieces. The music was high-energy and precise. The vocals of lead singer Dana Poblete were less precise, but she sounded good for the music. The second band of the night was local group State to State. I Will Always Have Teaching

Still thinking about education, it's funny; when I was a kid, I didn't care about grades. I didn't put in any effort to raise or maintain grades. I didn't even pay attention to what they were. There are a couple of factoids I retained from my middle school years, and they're not anything to be proud of. Now, back in college since 1995, I started out getting good grades. I took classes that interested me, and I had little trouble getting As in them.  Then I started taking general ed classes, with a goal of eventually getting a degree. These classes started to challenge me. Political Science, Economics: these took real effort to succeed in. But once I did, and then I got back into taking classes I liked (I had decided to major in music by then), I once again had an easy time maintaining my grades; Music Fundamentals was very enlightening and enthralling. The other music classes didn't feel like as much of a challenge as some of the gen ed classes because music is ...

Growing Up Sucks

Image
Great things happening at home. Delilah is getting so big, so grown up. I’m starting to feel it. Starting to get sad about the loss of innocence. She hasn’t lost that much of it, but the little bits are starting to hit home. She’s recently started saying that she doesn’t love Woody anymore. Seems innocuous enough, but let me put some perspective on it. When she was really little, like a year old, she would sit and watch, completely absorbed, any of the Toy Story movies. Woody was her favorite. Then, after seeing Toy Story 2 about 7 million times, she really took to Jessie. But she still loved Woody, the ol’ Woodster. So nowadays she’s saying “I don’t love Woody. I love Jessie and Buzz.” That’s fine, of course. It’s up to her to decide who and what she loves (we’ve even had to accept and not punish her for saying, “I don’t love Great Gramma!” because we can’t change that), but it makes me sad, and reminds me of the birthday I had over 30 years ago when my brother gave...
